In a
synthesis of management science with the creative arts,
CLICK is also offering drama consultancy workshops for
business.
Augusto Boal said that
“...everyone is an actor, but not everyone will
necessarily choose to act. Most of us go about our daily
lives expecting little, and doing little out of the
ordinary. We follow the rules, the conventions, the
restraints, in short, we are oppressed.”
His
subsequent work named “Theatre of the Oppressed”
utilises drama techniques to develop authentic
theatrical performance, but also promotes the
effectiveness theatre methods as a means of people
looking at their own behaviour in the quest to better
oneself. Boal developed "Forum Theatre" where,
facilitated by a neutral "character" whom Boal called
"The Joker", the audience would get the chance to
address their concerns and develop strategies through
discussion and improvisation of the problem.
CLICK utilises such theatrical practise (which goes
beyond basic "role play") to advise improvements in
management training. Workshops include "ACTING THE PART"
a half hour interactive session as part of the series of
events hosted by Brunel Business School aimed at raising
the student experience which focusses on the silent
communication of body language. Participants are taught
to become aware of their non verbal cues and sensitive
to those of others and given the opportunity to practise
their skills in a safe forum comprising "the Joker", an
actor and of course the audience themselves. CLICK has
also devised a 2 hour “ACE (Attitude, Competence,
Empathy) Self presentation” workshop and the 5-day
"Shaken not Speared - Project Management to Performance"
course which draws from Kolb’s (1984) Experiential
Learning, all aimed at offering a more holistic and
person-centred training experience to develop confident
and reflective learning managers.
We are also pleased to advise entrepreneurs in
developing the use of the arts in training.
All
sessions are facilitated by:

WHAT WE CAN
OFFER:
As well as productions, we offer LAMDA examination
tuition, and our team can prepare flexible creative arts
programmes culminating in a variety show (we would also
be able to tailor this to focus on certain aspects of
culture such as good citizenship or world arts.) We also
encourage students to create pieces themselves which we
would include in a showcase. We would also be able to
develop a full scale musical projects in which we can
involve performers on a larger scale.
WHY CHOOSE CLICK:
Of course there are many groups around offering such
services, so the choice has, of course, got to be that
of the “piper”, therefore, what does CLICK offer that
others do not?
In the first instance the Production Team are all
qualified teachers. We are experienced at creating
stimulating and enjoyable lessons to further the
education of people of all ages and abilities ranging
from University age to primary school (even adults!).
This sort of grounding is not often to be found in
theatre groups. Further, our teaching background is not
limited to the arts, and thus, while we wish to instil a
love of performance within whomsoever we work, we are
all advocates of pursuing a vocationally suitable career
(be it academic or practical) as well. Thus while we
offer to teach the “tools of the performance trade” and
give those we work with the opportunity to be involved
in a high level production, we also impress the
importance of utilising these skills in a transferrable
manner.
We are also a “freelance” team. We come together on
specific projects, but otherwise focus on our day jobs
(as teachers) and our own productions where we continue
to develop and reflect on our practise as educators to
keep improving each time we take on a new project as a
group. The freelance nature of our group is also
testimony to our ability to maintain a supportive
working relationship with each other, which is the
essence of creating the correct atmosphere to engender
creativity in the casts with whom we work. Further, our
core performers have always returned to work with us for
as long as we have been together which is again, a
highly positive reflection on the way this team
functions.
We also have close ties with professional performers who
can not only offer guest workshops in specific skills,
but will also spare some of their much sought after time
to give a performance of their acclaimed work.
Malaysian-born Ashley Alymann in particular is one of
our favourite actors and his award winning one-man
“Storyteller” productions written and performed by him
are nothing short of intoxicating.
Our programme not only involves educational workshops in
all aspects of the creative arts, but also the
opportunity for involvement in a variety or a full scale
production at the end of the workshop sessions which
consolidates the learning that has taken place. Offering
both a variety and full length production means we are
flexible depending on time and budget commitments.
Pine and Gilmore (1999) said of the theatrical
experience that it should at once be aesthetic,
educational, entertaining and escapist. We at CLICK
offer all four in our workshops and productions PLUS
honour the importance of treating all we work with, with
the same Courtesy, Learning, Integrity, Communication
and Kindness that we would expect from anyone we would
put on our stage.
We hope
that ours is the tune you would choose to dance to.
